First ‘Mars Inspired’ NFT Digital House sold for massive $500,000

Corona. Lockdown. Quarantine. Bored. Life of almost everyone of us can be described within these four words since 2019. And almost every other activity that we have done was shifted to online work, and digitalized drastically. According to statistics of ‘Statista’ – A business data platform, there were 4.13 billion internet users worldwide in 2019. This rose to over 4.66 billion till January, 2021; a growth of nearly 350 million internet users in a span of one year. Thus, almost 60% of the entire world population is now completely digitalized and world without internet has now became unimaginable.

While we can’t think of living without it, Krista Kim thought of living inside it. A contemporary artist wanted to investigate how people’s interest towards digital life have increased significantly and how digital screens and tools had impact during COVID-19 lockdowns. To do this out of ordinary, she developed a project ‘Mars House’, designed a house entirely rendered digitally and in 3D on a software usually used for creative video games – Unreal Engine. This is the NFT digital house.

Inspired by Kyoto’s architecture built for zen consciousness of the community, the Mars House was designed as a ‘light sculpture’ in May, 2020. This house can be exclusively experienced in virtual reality, and augmented reality environment apps such as SuperWorld in near future.

Reportedly it has became the first house to be sold on the NFT market place SuperRare for 288 Ether ($512,000), which is a crypto currency similar to bitcoin. But wait, what is NFT?

NFT Digital House: NFT?

Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) are nothing but unit of data on digital ledger which can be used in exchange for digital creations like digital artworks, video games, music files, etc. While digital files are themselves infinitely reproducible, NFTs representing them are tracked on their underlying blockchains to provide their buyers a proof of ownership. These types of tokens have swept the entire online collecting world and are an offset of the boom cryptocurrencies.

 Basically, if see in economics, fungible means interchangeable; like cash. While using cash, a Rs. 2000 note is same as another Rs. 2000 note and can be exchanged without losing any value. But here, NFTs are not interchangeable, are unique and used to prove that an item is one of a kind and are aimed to solve the problem central to digital collectibles.

Recently, if you follow the news, then Jack Dorsey has sold his first ever tweet – “Just setting up my twttr” – for $2.5m, sold in the form of NFTs!

The Mars House

The Mars House is a ‘light sculpture’ with LED substrate extending to the pool, which spreads throughout the entire perimeter of the house. It is extensively designed to reveal a soothing healing atmosphere. It has open plan and all floors, ceilings and even furniture were envisioned in glass. This glass will be a tempered printed high-quality glass from Italy, and NFT physical pieces and fabrics will be made from renewable materials. Also, beautiful hues can be seen all over the construction, enhancing the experience as a whole.

This house potentially extends the idea that screens can be used as digital instruments of well-being and future of our entire housing can be healed and empowered with art and technology. The amalgamation of these can relax, help, and refresh the mind; providing excellent quality of life. Interestingly, digital artworks and sculptures which can probably be used to design and decorate such digital houses have already been sold through NFTs.

Virtual furniture, architectural renderings, digital arts in jpeg, and beyond these also; there are numerous such crypto arts which are sold through NFTs for millions and billions of dollars. Such an interest of virtual designs tends to grow and signifies that how world has changed itself and the human thought-process of getting artforms like these.
